Your Clients Want AI Search Reports. Here’s the Template.
“So how are we doing on AI search?” Every SEO agency and marketing team is hearing this question now. And most don’t have a good answer because they don’t have a report.
Traditional SEO reporting is mature. Google Search Console data, ranking trackers, GA4 traffic reports. We’ve been doing those for years. AI search reporting? It’s the Wild West. No standard format. No agreed-upon KPIs. Most agencies are winging it.
I built this report template after our clients kept asking for it. It covers the metrics that matter, presents them clearly, and gives specific recommendations. Takes about 2 hours to compile once your monitoring is set up.
Report Section 1: Executive Summary
Start with a one-page summary. Executives won’t read 15 pages. Give them the headlines.
Executive Summary Contents
A single number: citation frequency as a percentage of tracked queries. Example: “Cited in 23% of target queries (up from 18% last month).”
Total sessions from AI platforms. Month-over-month change. Comparison to organic traffic as a percentage.
2-3 bullet points on what improved. “Now cited in Perplexity for ‘best CRM for startups’ query.”
1-2 bullet points on what needs attention. “Lost ChatGPT citation for ‘CRM comparison’ after competitor published new comparison page.”
Top 3 recommended actions for next month.
This page alone is worth the entire report. Many stakeholders won’t read past it. Make it count.
Report Section 2: Citation Tracking
The core of the report. Show exactly which queries cite the client and which don’t.
| Query | Perplexity | ChatGPT | Google AIO | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What is [industry term]? | ✅ Cited | ✅ Cited | ❌ Not cited | 🟢 +1 (ChatGPT new) |
| Best [product] for [use case] | ✅ Cited | ❌ Not cited | ✅ Cited | ⚪ No change |
| [Competitor] vs [Client] | ❌ Not cited | ❌ Not cited | ❌ Not cited | 🔴 Lost Perplexity |
| How to [solve problem] | ✅ Cited | ✅ Cited | ✅ Cited | 🟢 +2 (new citations) |
Track 15-25 queries per client. The “Change” column is what makes this report actionable. Clients care about trends, not snapshots.
For tracking methodology, reference our guide on what AI citations are and how to measure them.
Citation Frequency Over Time
Include a chart showing citation frequency (% of queries cited) month over month. This is the single most important trend line in the report.
Report Section 3: AI Referral Traffic
Pull this data from GA4. Show traffic from each AI platform separately.
| Source | Sessions | MoM Change | Engagement Rate | Conversions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| perplexity.ai | 342 | +28% | 72% | 8 |
| chatgpt.com | 189 | +45% | 68% | 5 |
| gemini.google.com | 67 | +12% | 71% | 2 |
| claude.ai | 23 | +100% | 78% | 1 |
| Total AI | 621 | +34% | 71% | 16 |
Key insights to include:
- How AI traffic compares to organic as a percentage (usually 2-5% in March 2026)
- Conversion rate comparison (AI vs organic vs paid). Highlight the 4.4x conversion advantage when the data supports it
- Top landing pages from AI traffic (which content is getting cited most)
Report Section 4: Content Performance
Show which content improvements are driving results.
| Page | AI Score (Before) | AI Score (After) | Citations Gained | AI Traffic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| /what-is-crm | 42 | 78 | +3 | 156 sessions |
| /crm-comparison | 55 | 82 | +2 | 89 sessions |
| /pricing-guide | 38 | 71 | +1 | 34 sessions |
| /new-features | 22 | 22 (not updated) | 0 | 0 sessions |
This table directly connects your work (content improvement) to results (citations and traffic). That’s the ROI story clients want to see.
Report Section 5: Competitive Benchmark
How does the client compare to competitors? Run a monthly competitive check on 5-10 key queries.
Competitive context makes the client’s numbers meaningful. A 23% citation rate doesn’t mean much in isolation. But “23% vs. competitor A at 45%” creates urgency and direction.
Report Section 6: Recommendations and Next Steps
Every report must end with specific, actionable recommendations. Not “improve content quality.” Specific.
Priority Action
Example: “Update /crm-comparison with January 2026 pricing data and add comparison table. This page is close to winning the ChatGPT citation for ‘best CRM comparison’ and updated pricing could push it over.”
Content Gap to Fill
Example: “Create a new page targeting ‘CRM for small teams.’ No competitor has strong content for this query, and it triggered zero citations in our analysis. Opportunity to win the citation with no competition.”
Technical Fix
Example: “Add FAQ schema to /pricing-guide. The page already has an FAQ section but no structured data. This is a 15-minute fix using our schema generator.”
Data Sources for the Report
Where does all this data come from?
| Data Point | Source | Collection Method |
|---|---|---|
| Citation presence | Manual checks + tools | Weekly query testing on Perplexity, ChatGPT, Google. Or use citation checker |
| AI referral traffic | GA4 | Custom channel group filtering AI referral sources |
| Content AI scores | Manual scoring | 10-signal scoring template (5 min per page) |
| Competitive data | Manual checks | Same queries tested for competitor citations monthly |
| Conversion data | GA4 | Conversion events filtered by AI referral source |
Presentation Tips
Format matters. Send the report as a designed PDF or a clean Google Slides deck. Not a spreadsheet. Not an email with bullet points. Clients pay for professionalism, and the report format is part of the deliverable.
Lead with progress. Start the exec summary with what improved, even if progress is small. “Citation frequency increased from 18% to 23% this month” is positive framing that keeps clients engaged.
Be honest about what’s hard. ChatGPT base model citations depend on training data updates, which you can’t control. Say that. Clients respect honesty more than hand-waving.
Connect to revenue. Whenever possible, show the conversion data. AI traffic that converts is the strongest argument for continued investment. The 4.4x conversion advantage is your ally here.

How This Report Evolves Over Time
Month 1 reports are heavy on baseline data. “Here’s where we start.” Not much to compare against.
By month 3, you have trends. Citation frequency trending up, traffic growing, content scores improving. The report tells a story.
By month 6, you can calculate ROI. Total AI traffic × conversion rate × average deal value = revenue from AI search. Subtract your costs. That’s the business case for continuing.
I’ve found that clients who see this report monthly are 3x more likely to increase their AEO investment after 6 months compared to clients who just get informal updates. The report makes the work visible. And visible work gets funded.

Frequently Asked Questions
15-25 queries is the sweet spot. Fewer than 10 doesn’t give you enough data to spot trends. More than 30 makes the report unwieldy and takes too long to compile. Choose queries that represent your client’s core topics and highest-value customer questions.
About 2 hours once your monitoring systems are set up. The first month takes longer (3-4 hours) because you’re establishing baselines. Most of the time goes into the citation tracking checks and writing the recommendations section.
Be honest about it. Explain what was done, why it hasn’t moved the needle yet, and what the adjusted plan is. Some improvements take 60-90 days to show up in AI citations, especially for ChatGPT which depends on model training updates. If results are flat after 3 months, revisit the strategy.
Yes. Replace the branding with your agency’s logo and colors. The structure and data points are universal. Many agencies add their own custom sections (like a “What We Did This Month” section) to showcase their work alongside the results data.
